TREATMENT OF NEUROMUSCOLAR DISEASE
The Neuromuscular Functional Rehabilitation and Recovery Unit was born within the Private Hospitals Group in 2001 with the intention of taking care of the secondary problems associated with such rare diseases.
They are still incurable today, but we can treat them. This means that we are now able to take care of the secondary problems associated with them by ensuring a proper care of the quality of daily life for those who are affected by them. We were the first Medical Unit in Italy devoting to this. The concept we pursue, our aim, is not to consider what a person with severe disabilities has lost forever, but whatever good we can still do for that very person and start from there our rehabilitation path to maximize the potentials remaining. This is achieved through personalized programs taking care of the secondary problems that afflict our patients. Our pride is our ten-year experience, the competence of our multidisciplinary team and the humanitarian approach we have always had.
In Bologna, between admissions and ambulatory services, more than 500 patients a year from all over the country and some foreign states have rare neuromuscular diseases. Evidence of the quality of our work is the fact we are the referring center for numerous NPOs for the sick and several scientific publications issued along the years showing the results achieved in the field of personal care in this particular context of highly complex pathologies. Up to a few years ago, these goals were unimaginable for us too.
All of this was made possible thanks to the advanced technology in the field of Medicine applied to the person and to the pharmacological enhancement for some clinical aspects in connection with this context. Among these, we have to emphasize our twenty years of experience in assisting cough and in applying non-invasive ventilation (NIV), which have significantly increased the length and quality of our patients’ life.
Another field we have always taken care of is likewise important: namely, the technology applied to disability that has allowed many of our patients to improve their functional autonomy. This result has been achieved thanks to the experience and competence of our technicians specialized in aids and orthoses.
