WHY “UNIVERSITÀ CASTRENSE”

During the First World War (1914-1918), Castrense University was established in San Giorgio di Nogaro (UD) in order to deal with the health emergency that had arisen in the wake of the conflict. The University offered degrees in Medicine and Surgery, enabling about 1,200 drafted university students, from all over Italy, in their last two years of study, to complete their degrees and graduate.

The term Castrense relates to the fact that the University’s headquarters were originally located in a military camp (castrum, in Latin). From a structural point of view, barracks were set up for the various study rooms, for the refectory and for the dormitories. The then existing "Maran" cinema was used as the main student hall, and the Town Hall’s main hall became the Aula Magna, while the cemetery structure was used as the Anatomy Room.

In the village, two main Military Health hospitals and six Red Cross hospitals were also built, with a capacity of several hundred beds, where wounded soldiers were hospitalized, as well as those affected by diseases, mainly typhoid, cholera and tuberculosis.

The present Medical Centre, founded in 2007 in the same area as those health settlements, was thus named Università Castrense to keep alive the memory of an important page in Italian Military Health history, and to remember those Doctors who were literally trained "in the field", many of whom later lost their lives in battle at the front as military operations continued.
